The project

Makani developed airborne wind energy: a kite that generates power while flying in large circles, tethered to a ground station. Each ground station was a first-of-a-kind piece of heavy hardware that had to be built, moved and installed at remote test sites.

Scope

  • Managing fabrication and assembly of ground stations with machine shops and fabricators
  • Moving a ground station to a new test site
  • Facility management at the test site
  • Moving the program to Hawaii
  • Fabricating another unit and taking it to Norway

What it took

Oversize and heavy-haul transport, ocean shipping, foundations, multi-crane lifts and long stretches of international travel. A complex, demanding program, delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.
